The Confederacy
Only 2/3 of the men who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg with Lee would return with him to Virginia. The Confederates lost 27,000 men, most of whom they would not be able to replace. The Confederate Officer Corps was hit hard, causing disorganization and confusion. Of the Confederate Officers, Barksdale, Semmes, Garnett, Armistead, Avery, Pender, Pettigrew, and Marshall were killed. Hood, Fry, Scales, Lowrance, Jones, Robertson, and Anderson were seriously wounded and Kemper and Archer were captured by the Union.
The Union
Counting the battle at Winchester, Union losses are 26,000. However, these men could be much more easily replaced than the Confederate losses, which gave the Union a distinct advantage over Lee's battered army.
